A day out in Berlin

German

There are around 100 million native speakers of German in Germany, Austria and Switzerland making it the most frequently spoken language in Central Europe.  For many people in the new EU countries German is their first foreign language.  Germany is the most important European trading partner for businesses in the North East.  A knowledge of German may therefore open doors to job opportunities within companies which do business with the vast number of German speaking businesses in Europe.  This is one of many reasons for choosing to study German at Central High.

A knowledge of German will give you access to one of the greatest cultures in Europe for German is the language of Einstein, Freud, Goethe, Nietzsche, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven.

German is the second most used language in the field of scientific publications.  If you can read German you gain access to research publications and findings in all areas of modern science.  Particularly for students who intend to follow a career in the sciences it would be immensely advantageous to read the many publications in the original language.

Germany is a country of great landscape and tourist attractions. Many people will have heard of and may have visited places like The Black Forest, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg or fascinating events like the Oktoberfest and Der Karneval.  If you speak the language you will be able to enjoy trips to Germany much more.

Every year students studying German at Central High will have the opportunity to practise their language skills on either a trip, or an exchange.

• In Years 7 and 8 the pupils have the opportunity to visit German cities. In the past we have travelled to Berlin and Leipzig.  This trip takes place ever other year so every girl in Years 7 and 8 will get the opportunity to go and try out their language skills in Germany.

• Pupils from Years 9 and 10 are encouraged to take part in an exchange with our partner school in Heidelberg.  Many girls go again in Year 10 as they have enjoyed the experience immensely.

• Year 12 and 13 students have the unique opportunity to do a work placement in Germany.  Apart from the obvious linguistic and cultural benefits this will also add a very valuable dimension to any UCAS application.

German is much easier to learn and speak than most people think.  There seems to be a misconception that German is a difficult language to learn.  Far from it.  Our students have consistently achieved outstanding results at GCSE, AS and A2.
