Economics

Economics is all about the real world and how it impacts on everyday life.  The A Level programme focusses on the fundamental concepts and theories, essential to an understanding of modern economics, applied to the situation of what is happening today.  An interest in what is going on the UK and the world forms a good starting point for students.

The AS course is made up of three core units:

  • The Market System
  • Market Failure and Government Intervention
  • The National and International Economy

These are examinable in January and June of Year 12.

The A2 course is made up of three units, one compulsary and two optional:

  • Economics in a European Context (compulsary synoptic unit)
  • Either Economics of Work and Leisure or Transport Economics
  • Either Economics of Development or The UK Economy

These are examinable in January and June of Year 13.

The subject is new to the students when they enter Sixth Form and the only requirement is GCSE Mathematics, minimum grade C.  This is because the course will draw on and develop skills of logical argument in both handling of information about the economy, in the form of tables and graphs, and in understanding and explaining theories underlying economic relationships.

Economics combines well with any other A Level subject and forms a useful basis for many career opportunities.
