Biology

Search for the secrets of life. Enter the amazing world of living organisms. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest for the forces of life: the forces that drive living bodies over land, sea and through the air; the forces that produce towering redwood trees and that help the lowly fungus to defeat them; the forces acting in microscopic cells and the great ecosystems of the world. Working through time and a world of danger and turmoil – the force of life is incredibly powerful.

Be smart. Understand it. Study Biology.

In Year 7 we explore the basis of life, cells, the body, the main kingdoms of living organisms, how organisms interact with each other and how they have become adapted to their surroundings.

In Year 8 we take a look at what we put into our bodies and how this affects us, as well as studying organ systems in more detail.

In Year 9 we build on Year 8 work and learn how we can be fitter, healthier individuals as well as studying plants and their value to us.

In Key Stage 4 we follow the AQA GCSE syllabus, which takes topics covered in Key Stage 3 further, including cells, human physiology, methods of movement, plant physiology, immunity, microbiology, ecology, genetics and evolution.

In Sixth Form we remain with AQA for the A Level syllabus, covering biochemistry, cell biology, animal and plant physiology, DNA and protein synthesis, genetics and genetic engineering, ecology, evolution and classification, causes of disease and our defence against them.

Teaching and learning styles include traditional methods as well as practicals, videos, field work, visits and invited speakers. Paper and 3D models are made as well as a variety of prepared models and living organisms being used to illustrate topics. The girls produce diagrams, summaries and posters in their work as well as doing written accounts, tests and questions.

ICT is used in the delivery of many lessons by animated powerpoint presentations and by students when computer simulations replace experiments which might be harmful to organisms or for working on results and statistics.

Biological activities are included in Science Club for younger members of Senior Department.
