The Junior Department at Chapman House in Sandyford provides the setting for girls to develop further their social, physical, creative and academic skills and to grow in independence, fulfilling their potential and preparing for their move to secondary education at 11+. Chapman House is set in five acres of gardens and woodlands in the conservation corridor of Jesmond Dene. A John Dobson listed house provides specialist facilities and is linked to a block of light and spacious classrooms by a magnificent hall. Girls move to Chapman House from West Avenue after Year 3. New entrants are admitted to Years 4, 5 and 6 by entrance examination (usually in January) in English, Mathematics, Reading, Reasoning and interview. These exams form part of an informal yet informative day in school. Specialist rooms for Music, Art and Design, Science and ICT provide opportunities for subject skills to be developed in their own right as well as being applied in other areas of the curriculum. A wide range of extra curricular activities is offered, mainly as lunchtime clubs, including Gardening, ICT, Chess, Latin, Library, Science, Christian Union, Writing and Sewing. Speech and Drama, Fencing and Dancing are also available as extra lessons. Netball and tennis squads meet at lunchtimes and after school. Music is an important aspect of life at Central High. All girls learn a stringed instrument as part of their Year 4 curriculum and many choose to continue the lessons thereafter. There are opportunities to learn a wide of range of instruments on an individual basis and the girls also have the chance to join the choir, orchestra and year group recorder ensembles. These groups perform several times through the year for the rest of the school, parents, at music festivals and for the public. Each year group works to achieve an annual production which combines dramatic and musical skills. All girls participate in gymnastics, swimming and games lessons. In the winter term the girls play netball, with Year 6 also being introduced to hockey. Extra curricular activities include team squads for Years 5 and 6 for netball and tennis, fencing for Years 4 and 5. In the summer term, the girls play tennis and rounders and participate in athletics. Matches are organised against local schools and the girls take part in competitions organised locally and nationally.
