<xpose/> provides the developers of e-commerce applications a generic framework with which to build highly secure yest flexible extranet style solutions linking back office data sources with DMZ hosted web servers.

The core component within <xpose/> is the message handling proxy. This proxy can be thought of as an XML transport pipe. This object has two parts the web server 'client' which sits within the web server script, using asp or Java Server pages, and the application logic server, 'server' part.

Communications through the Firewall is limited to a single inbound proxy on one user definable port. This maximises the efficiency of the Firewall and its ability to enforce protocol compliance and access control lists.

Communications with the client system requires no more than a http browser. Additional security measures such as SSL or VPN certificates can be added to provide authentication or encryption without adding complexity to the underlying application.

The <xpose/> transport mechanism will only handle compliant XML documents. These may be combined with a DTD or schema document to enforce validity and compliance with known content structure. This minimises the risk of any malicious code being transported by the <xpose/> object.

The <xpose/> architecture allows the developer to separate the application into 3 distinct layers or tiers, separating the web-based presentation layers from the business logic and the back end data systems.
