What is a firewall?
It is a device used to connect your company’s network to the internet to allow your employees to safely access the internet. It can also be used to provide a low cost means of multi-site connectivity and remote access using a Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Which is the hacker?
The firewall prevents access to your network from any unauthorised source, e.g.:

Hardware vs Software
We are often asked what is better a Hardware Firewall or a Software one. In our opinion there is no difference between the two. Indeed there is no such thing as a Hardware Firewall, given the common understanding of what a firewall is.
There are hardware appliances, that is a pre-packaged combination of hardware and software. There are products that are sold only as a software license only, leaving it up to the user to provide the hardware. In all cases the final implementation consists of software running on some hardware platform.
The BorderWare Firewall Server runs on standard Intel hardware, our preferred system is the Dell Poweredge 350.
The Cisco Pix is an Firewall appliance, it still runs software on a specialised hardware platform.
The real question is not simply hardware? or software? but a combination of how good is it technically? how easy is it to configure and manage? how cost effective is it?
