The Information Commissioner’s Office recommends that portable and mobile devices including magnetic media used to store and transmit personal information, the loss of which could cause damage or distress to individuals, should be protected using approved encryption software which is designed to guard against the compromise of information.
The Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, reportedly told the Lord's Constitution Committee that he favours making careless handling of data a criminal offence. Anyone knowingly or recklessly flouting data protection principles is likely to be liable for fines up to £5000. This potentially includes anyone with data that contains any personal detail at all.
What does this mean to your organisation? You need to look at data encryption now. Come and talk to the experts make sure only authorised people get to see your data and avoid your own 'Data Gate'.
