City Workers tricked by 'Free Holiday' CD ruse

Removable Media Control

What turned out to a 'harmless' ruse by Robert Chapman, director of The Training Camp, a computer training and consulting business based in London, proves that Security is more than just the application of technology.

Technology without training and awareness is unlikely to prove effective against the social engineering that most security consultants would agree is the biggest weapon in the fraudster's amoury.

There are however a range of specialist tools and applications that will help the fight against less well informed users behaviour. SafeGuard Advanced Security with it's ability to control the use of CD-ROM devices and media would have prevented Chapman's stunt succeeding.

SafeGuard Advanced Security's RMM module can control the use of any removable media such as CD-ROMs unless they are registered centrally. Combined with SafeGuard Advanced Security's ASAR would further enhance the company's ability to control the use of media or device.

SafeGuard Advanced Security's ASAR can be configured to restrict users access to specific applications and limit those applications to use specific devices and file types. This makes it simple and practical to, for example, limit users to using their CD-ROM Word and Acrobat and restrict these applications to PFD and word files only.

Chapman's use of the browser and some nafarious URL wouldn't have got a look-in.
