MBNA latest in phishing expedition

MBNA LogoMBNA one of the largest, if not the largest European credit card providers is the subject of the latest email based phishing scam. The email arrives with a couple of lines of random text hidden by using white text colours and an image. Various phrases have been seen including Nascar Day of the Dead. The link which surrounds the image is one of those long encoded URLs which will take the browser not to MBNA's web site but to "219.117.201.106:2017/m/index.htm ". The link also opens up a real MBNA web page as a back drop to the rogue one, lending some credibility to the scam.

Users with updated web browsers should not be affected by this email, except perhaps Psychologically. screen shot of email scam
It's quite a sophisticated scam, see the screen shot, but one or two things, like grammar should make people suspicious and it is, as always, bound to tempt someone.

On the plus side MBNA's web site does have a link to a page with some advice for their customer on what to do, or rather what not to do. On the down side the link isn't all that prominent on their .com site and the big link button on their European site while advertising internet safety tips doesn't take you directly to the relevant info.

John Greaves Head of Communications of MBNA Europe said,

This is not a breach of MBNA security, it is an attempt by a third-party to extract information from our Customers whose personal e-mail addresses have been randomly generated.

He also advises that any MBNA customer who feels thay have given away any personal information should contact the company immediately and reminds customers that MBNA will never ask for personal account information by e-mail.
