Friday, May 23, 2003Disgusting Table Manners
PC Pro the only computing magazine I have a subscription to, seems to have had a hiccup in it's publishing process and printed an ancient article by Tom Arah detailing how to use HTML tables for ..the layout mechanism of choice.. This can be the only explanation for the publication of such an outdated badly researched article. There is no mention of the W3C standards or recommendations, especially the HTML Techniques for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines written way back in November 2000. Equally absent is any notion of the current movement to use table free designs by many of today's designers who consider usability; accessibility; reuse; and future-proofing their designs as being equally important as the art.
Tom is obviously coming from a the design perspective of the print media and trying to force fit that into the on-line web environment. It is just bad and misleading and for me exceptionally disappointing to see in a publication which until now I had though to be up to date and authoritative.®©
