e-mail reveals the inner workings

hp logoA new research paper published by Joshua R. Tyler, Dennis M. Wilkinson, Bernardo A. Huberman from HP labs Palo Alto CA, describes how the analysis of email logs can be used to identify 'communities of practice' within an organisation. While the research work done at Palo Alto was fairly benign, seeking to establish the real workings of the organisation, its quite easy to see how this could be applied to the general mass of e-mail traffic on the internet to identify hidden organisations such as terrorist groups. Combine this research with the UK Government's proposed requirements for data retention under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime & Security Act 2001 Part II previously reported here and one starts to think that paranoia is justified. EMC double sales

emc logoEMC Corp. announced a doubling of it's sales of it's Centera product line. The company is siting the significance of the SEC Rule 17a-4 and the US HIPPA Health Act as two of the major reasons for the growth in sales. According to EMC's vice president of content addressed storage, Roy Sanford, the Securities and Exchange Commission Rule 17a-4 is the "Grand-daddy of them all" and that data integrity is the major issue. Here at ecommnet we believe storage products like Centera form part of a solution for e-mail and data archiving. The other major element is having a proper secure tamper proof policy driven archiving process. Note this product will suit only the largest customers as the entry level for the Centera product is around $150,000 US, but you get 8TB of store for that...... I'll have two then...ED We'd also take issue with EMC's marketing blurb on it's web site which states Centera is the world's first Content Addressed Storage (CAS) solution , because we remember the old ICL Content Addressable File Store (CAFS) way back in the '70's.
