neulevel, a subsidiary of NeuStar has been chosen to at as the co-ordination point for all registrars for the new .cn domain by the China Internet Network Information Center. The opening up of the .cn domain represents a huge new market for anyone wishing to expand the on-line presence. At the same time the risks associated with dealing with the Internet population culturally and geographically so distant would seem to be equally daunting. From a simple security standpoint, the tactic of blocking all .cn domains to try and avoid spam on the basis that a large proportion of it originates from there, or from Open Relays hosted in the .cn domain, will no longer be practicalposted by Robert Campbell 9:33 AM Borderware roadmap
Borderware Technologies published roadmap for future development of their flagship firewall the Borderware Firewall Server. While there are some relatively interesting but minor enhancements the main thrust is a consolidation. One of the highlights is the upgrade to the underlying operating system which will introduce better hardware compatibility including the long awaited suport for RAID. It's good to note that BorderWare still have the comitment to the Common Criteria Certification process. BorderWare was the first firewall in the world to achieve Common Criteria EAL4 certification in January 2000, and the only firewall to have achieved a second certification in January 2002. The most recent certification included EAL5 vulnerability analysis.posted by Robert Campbell 8:30 AM Tuesday, March 18, 2003US Army hit
Latest news from CBR Online by Kevin Murphy details US Army web site being hit with the IIS buffer overflow exploit reported yesterday. While the web server in question was not particularly sensitive in it's own right it was on the .mil domain and on the eve of what looks like war this leaves most of us in a rather contemplative moodposted by Robert Campbell 10:20 AM Wrox on the rocks
Wrox Press the publishers are in liquidation along with their sister companies Friends of Ed, Glasshaus and Curlingstone. News reached us via an email from Computer Manuals. Wrox published excellent technical tomes many of which adorn the shelves here at ecommnet all of them dog-eared, a testimony to their usefulness. In addition to the Wrox Press and book publishing the group was responsible for many useful web sites most notable are ASP-Today and C#-Today. The loss will be felt far and wide with the community.posted by Robert Campbell 10:08 AM MS-IIS5 overflowing again
Microsoft has just released (17th March) yet another advisory for IIS5 detailing a buffer overflow vulnerability in the WebDAV components within IIS. WebDAV, Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning protocol is a set of extensions to IIS defined in RFC 2518. There are details of patches and workarounds in the bulletin. Only Windows 2000 and IIS5 are affected. Service pack 3 doesn't get you out of the deep and smelly stuff either, however older versions NT4; IIS4 and XP do not have the same vulnerability. ...others maybe but not this one.posted by Robert Campbell 9:27 AM Monday, March 17, 2003moreover en-gulf-ed in spurious news
Why we ask, are Moreover reporting the old 'WTC Survivor' as a new virus threat in today's news feed? This hoax has been debunked for over two years and even the briefest research would have confirmed that. Is it something to do with where it's being reported, Gulf News Online Edition, perhaps? a familiar phrase about bandwaggons and jumping to conclusions springs to mindposted by Robert Campbell 4:56 PM The vulture turns green
