 EMC's Centera is at the heart of many email archiving solutions including KVS's Enterprise Vault. Relying on the underlying data store for the protection of the data is the only way they can attempt to achieve any kind of tamper proof quality to their archive.
Recently the security of Centera's MD5 Hashing algorithm has been questioned, throwing into doubt the real value of using this approach to achieve compliance.
While EMC brushes off Centera compliance question there are still some doubts within the industry.
