Saturday, June 19, 2004Patient Data Compromised in NHS Hospital
In yet another incident where NHS IT equipment has been lost or stolen confidential patient data has been compromised. At the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire, nine computers containing several years worth of confidential patient data and teaching materials were stolen from the hospital's pathology department. The Trust's hospitals includes the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford where another theft was recently experienced, again involving confidential patient data. Its therefore very surprising that the major concern that the Trust's National Health Service (NHS) spokesman Phil Hipkiss was one of data loss not security. He's quoted as saying '..the data isn't lost since it is backed up daily.'
