John Cawdell, that man from phones4U who banned email earlier this year, is in the news again. This time for something more mundane, predicting doom and gloom in the mobile phone market. One of the issue he sites is the growth, or rather lack of it, in the data market. Cawdell is quoted in a BBC article as saying "Data revenues are relatively small in the scheme of things," he said, "and it's difficult for operators to get excited about wallpaper." Well that's true enough but here at ecommnet we consider that the network's approach to GPRS tariffs have a much greater and wholly negative impact on any other useful data applications being developed. The sooner we get a fixed charge for data the sooner companies and individuals will invest in real business applications like email.
