Tuesday, April 08, 2003e-mail reveals the inner workings
A new research paper published by Joshua R. Tyler, Dennis M. Wilkinson, Bernardo A. Huberman from HP labs Palo Alto CA, describes how the analysis of email logs can be used to identify 'communities of practice' within an organisation. While the research work done at Palo Alto was fairly benign, seeking to establish the real workings of the organisation, its quite easy to see how this could be applied to the general mass of e-mail traffic on the internet to identify hidden organisations such as terrorist groups. Combine this research with the UK Government's proposed requirements for data retention under the Anti-Terrorism, Crime & Security Act 2001 Part II previously reported here and one starts to think that paranoia is justified.
