How to Upgrade MXtreme Mail Firewall

Firmware Update

The firmware update replaces the current version running on MXtreme systems. Note that it is not a patch but a complete update - the system must be entirely refreshed. This procedure requires that a complete backup be performed, the system restarted in update mode and the new image loaded via a network connection. Instructions on this are found below.

Firmware Update Procedure

The MXtreme software is loaded onto the system at the factory. Firmware updates are loaded via the network using HTTP. BorderWare has packaged the update with a lightweight HTTP server called BTiWeb that you can run on any Windows based workstation or server.

The Firmware Update procedure is in two parts: first download and set up BTiWeb, second reset the MXtreme system and load the new image.
Proceed as follows:

Step A

  1. Obtain your copy of the update package. You should contact BorderWare Technical Support for this. Have your Support Contract number ready before you call. You will be given the location of the package, together with the necessary authentication information. The package is available either as an ISO (special format that can be burned direct to CD) or as a WinZip archive (for loading on a Windows workstation).
  2. When you have downloaded the package, access the directory or CD you have created.
  3. Run the "btiweb.exe" program. This runs a small web server from which Mxtreme can download the firmware update. (Note: you will have to stop any other web server that may be running on the system.)
  4. Note the IP address or name of this server - you will need to specify it to Mxtreme later on in Step B part 5.

Step B

  1. Stop the Mail System (from the Management menu). No further mail will be accepted or delivered.
  2. Backup the system. The backup file will contain all the current mail queues, quarantine folder as well the configuration.
  3. Reboot the system.
  4. As the system starts, you will be prompted to press "R" to reinstall. If you have pressed 'R" at the correct moment (there is a window of about 5 seconds), the system will display "Reinstalling...”. If it does not, restart the system and try again.
  5. The system is now in "update mode". Follow the prompts and select "Network installation". You will be prompted for some network information to temporarily identify the Mxtreme on the network. You will also need to specify the URL of BTiWeb, for example "http://myworkstation/mxXX-Final.img/". The slash at end of the URL is required.
  6. The Mxtreme will now download and then install the firmware update.
  7. Follow the prompts to complete the update procedure.
  8. Log on via the Web Admin interface, complete the initialization, and then proceed to the Management menu and select Backup/Restore.
  9. Restore the backup file, review the settings and start the Mail system.
  10. The Firmware Update is complete.
