Hacker
A hacker is anyone trying to gain access to your systems over the Internet without permission. Many people still believe this is a personal issue an that a hacker specifically targets a company or individual. This is not so, their motivations are more complex than that. The most common misunderstanding that this leads to is that they 'will not come after me , we're too small...'. Well they don't know and don't care who or what you are, they just want access to your machine(s). Note most 'hacks' are now coming from automated systems such as 'worms' see below.
Worm
A worm is a program that attacks systems and propogates itself by copying itself to the compromised machines....and so on. A recent example of this is the SQL-Slammer Worm which exploited a buffer overflow vulnerability in Microsoft's MSDE the desktop version of SQL Server.
Trojan
VPN
A Virtual Private Network is a mechanism used to build network interconnectivity over a public network using encrypted 'tunnels'.
